On a mission to make physical activity a vital part of everyday life, ParticipACTION is a non-profit organization focused on getting Canadians to sit less and move more. Their latest Pulse Report revealed that 87% of Canadians recognize they need to be more active; however, only 18% of the nation is getting the recommended 150 minutes of weekly physical activity. In response, ParticipACTION launched their “Everything gets better when you get active” campaign to remind Canadians of the benefits that come with regular physical activity.
Looking for a way to address the problem through a tailored, one-to-one experience, ParticipACTION partnered with GALE (data) and Clearbridge (mobile app) to build a data-driven app. “At GALE, we’re inspired by ParticipACTION’s passion to get Canadians moving. Their innovative approach and GALE’s data-driven expertise makes it easy for Canadians to take the next step.” GALE’s CEO Brad Simms explained.
Recognizing not all Canadian’s physical activity levels are the same, the ParticipACTION app can help determine a realistic and measurable goal that is personalized to each user. GALE developed the strategy, structure, and design for this customized approach. Leveraging behavioral change theory and user data, the app inspires individuals to reach their physical activity goals with relevant content and rewards like gift cards.
Customized Content: Rooted in data science and machine learning, the app provides personalized content to users based on personal activity goals and content engagement. Users can explore a tailored feed filled with articles, images, video’s & GIFs that inspires them to get moving.
Badges & Rewards: As a way to help incentivize Canadians to reach their physical activity goals, the app features an activity tracker that allows users to earn badges after each activity milestone is reached. The more badges the user collects, the more ballots that are entered, the higher the chance there is to win a variety prizes.
“The team at GALE and Clearbridge mobile helped to bring our vision to life,” said Elio Antunes, President and CEO of ParticipACTION. “The ParticipACTION app truly will help Canadians meet their physical activity goals through a customized experienced rooted in behavior change theory, incentives, and rewards. The app is available to all Canadians and we will continue to work with our partners to continuously improve the experience.”
